The Bad
Petrolatum
This is also known as Petroleum jelly and Vaseline. You may look at some of your wave creams and notice this as one of the main ingredients. Although petrolatum does not cause many health issues, it is known to clog your pores. If you’ve been using wave cream and have not been able to notice new growth or thickness, it’s because of the Vaseline not allowing your pores to breathe and make room for new hair growth. These ingredients can cause acne, hindered skin respiration, imbalanced oil levels in your scalp, and skin irritation.
Fragrance
If the manufacturer put this on the bottle, it means they don’t want to tell you what else is in the product
Isopropyl Alcohol
It strips away oils from your scalp leaving your hair dry and brittle. Ethanol Alcohol, Ethyl Alcohol, Isopropanol Alcohol, Propyl Alcohol, and SD Alcohol are also known to do this.
Methylisothiazolinone
This is another common preservative in hair products, which is linked to lung toxicity, allergic reactions, and possible neurotoxicity.
Parabens (propylparaben and benzyl paraben)
Parabens are xenoestrogens, included in shampoos as a preservative. They can disrupt hormones and even pose a cancer risk.
Phthalates
These were banned from use in toy manufacturing in California, 2009, because of links between them and cancer. However, they are still often used in hair products.
Retinyl Palmitate
Considered a gentler version of retinol, but it is often added to personal care products in greater concentrations than retinol in order to be effective. It still has potential associations with developmental and reproductive toxicity, and has been found to enhance photocarcinogenicity (heightening the risk of cancer when exposed to UV rays.)
Sulfates(Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate)
Sulfates strip oil and dirt out of your hair so well, they deplete the naturally produced sebum that moisturizes your hair. While sulfates can be beneficial for hair that gets oily quickly or has looser curls, they're usually a no-no for naturally curly hair.
Synthetic Colors
Synthetic colors such as D&C Red 27 or FD&C Blue 1, are derived from petroleum or coal sources. These synthetic colors are suspected to be carcinogenic, skin irritants, and linked to ADHD in children. The European Union has banned the use of these ingredients, which is a big red flag.
Toluene
Also used as a solvent that can dissolve paint and paint thinner, but it is also found in some hair color/bleaching products. This chemical can affect the respiratory system, irritate the skin, and even cause developmental damage in the fetus if expecting mothers are exposed to it. Commonly labeled as benzene, tuluol, phenylmethane, or methylbenzene.
Triclosan
This is a common antimicrobial chemical used in personal care products, but it is also a known endocrine disruptor and skin irritant.
Formaldehyde, Diazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydantoin, Glyoxal, Imidazolidinyl urea, Polyoxymethylene urea, Quaternium-15, Sodium hydroxymethylglycinate
These are other preservatives and they are extremely irritating to the skin and eyes. It is a known animal carcinogen and may increase cancer risk for humans as well. Keep in mind that certain preservatives release formaldehyde!

A preservative is an anti-microbial solution that helps to prevent mold and other yucky things from growing in your products. Preservatives are essential components of cosmetics and toiletries because they ensure the microbial quality of these products. They function by creating an environment that is unfavorable for the survival and growth of micro-organisms.
Optiphen PLUS is a natural Preservative. Optiphen+ is a unique paraben-free and formaldehyde-free liquid preservative system which consists of Phenoxyethanol in an emollient base of Caprylyl Glycol. As said from the supplier, it is considered an 100% all-natural preservative.
International Specialty Products (ISP) has been successfully formulating preservatives and preservative systems since 1955. With concerns rising in relation to safety and skin sensitization of some classes of preservatives, there is a growing need to develop alternative preservatives for the market. As a market leader, ISP has been dedicating preservation research to alternative chemistries for many years. As part of an intensive research and development program focused on introducing safe and effective technologies to face the rising challenges of the cosmetic industry, ISP successfully launched the Optiphen® family of preservatives to supplement ISP’s existing preservation chemistries.
